Whether you’re looking for a quick bite to bring to the beach or you’re just craving a delicious deli spread, Santa Barbara has got plenty of choices when it comes to great sandwiches. From gourmet American to authentic Greek gyros, here’s our guide for where to find the best sandwiches in the city:


Panino is so popular there are actually six locations throughout Santa Barbara and the valley, but our favorite is located downtown, across from the historical Presidio. Every sandwich on the menu is delicious, plus all bread is made fresh in-house. For a major indulgence, try the Panino Cobb Sandwich with chicken, prosciutto, avocado and English Stilton cheese. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option, we recommend the Caprese on ciabatta.

Jeannine’s bakery is a local favorite in Santa Barbara for everything from giant cappuccinos to loaded salads and fresh baked goods, but not to be missed are the excellent sandwiches for lunch. Our favorites are the Chicken Pesto and the Turkey Berry, made with homemade cranberry chutney and balsamic mixed greens. We also suggest their famous mango iced tea to go with.

Three Pickles

Three Pickles is the most classic deli on our list, serving cold and hot subs stacked with quality meat and traditional toppings. Customers rave about the fresh ingredients, generous portions and reasonable prices you’ll find here, making it a lunchtime staple for anyone working Downtown.

In addition to having a great selection of prepared foods for picnics, the trendy Metropulos market in the Funk Zone has a huge selection of sandwiches and Greek inspired lunch options. We of course suggest a Gyro with ground lamb and beef and housemade tzatziki sauce. However, if you’re looking for a more American sandwich, try the Okeydokey Artichokey made with artichoke hearts, turkey, goat cheese and roasted red peppers, or order the Diparma with layers of prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and balsamic.

South Coast Deli

Last but certainly not least, South Coast Deli is exactly where you want to head for an extensive sandwich and salad menu that will satisfy whatever craving you might have. With so many options, it’s hard to chose a standout, but we love the ‘When in Rome,’ made with chicken breast, almond and sage pesto, arugula and pecorino. Barbecue lovers will enjoy the BBQ Pork or the BBQ Chicken with bacon and avocado. While you’re there, don’t miss the housemade Kombucha on tap!
