Santa Barbara is an esteemed fitness and outdoors destination. With studios and organizations dedicated to exercise and health around town, we were able to dig up five workouts to try on your next trip to Santa Barbara.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

All experience levels welcome at the Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy located in Downtown Santa Barbara. Here, beginner students learn the basics while incorporating their own goals into each workout, including self-defense, stress relief, weight loss and self-confidence. Tradition is important here, so give it a try and experience a workout that combines culture with strength. Private classes are offered as well for $120/hour.

Natural Movement

Natural Movement is an innovative, outdoor workout scheme that bypasses the gym and focuses on ‘practical movement’ instead. The skills you will gain through this program include running, jumping, climbing, crawling, and balancing. Students say they feel more childlike and alive, while instructors claim this routine will prepare you for real-world scenarios and make you feel strong and independent. Classes are offered every week and cost $12 each.

Aerial Dance

The Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance is the best spot in town for unique dance workouts that are as beautiful as they are challenging. Try a Beginner/Intermediate class to learn technique using fabric, lycra, corde lisse and trapeze as well as stretching and alignment. Drop-in classes cost is $25 and it is best to call ahead for availability.

Rock Climbing  

The Santa Barbara Rock Gym offers a fun and easy way to get a workout while trying something new. Classes are offered for those who have never tried indoor climbing as well as experienced climbers. You can also rent equipment there and get started on your own. Everything is simple to use, courses are organized by level, and friendly staff provide consistent help. One day pass costs $17 for adults and prices for classes vary.

Fit Buddha

Fit Buddha in Santa Barbara is an award-winning pilates studio that focuses on body conditioning using the MegaFormer machine and Indoor Cycling classes. Workouts here are intense but effective, and are wildly popular for the results they yield. If you’re looking to push yourself on your trip, this is the spot for you. Classes are offered in packages or private sessions cost $110.
