Hearst Castle is approximately a 2 hour drive from Hotel Milo and is a national and historic mansion once owned by William Randolph Hearst. The sprawling estate is known as The Enchanted Hill or “La Cuesta Encantada. In the 1920’s and 1930’s Hearst Castle was the place to see and be seen. A-listers who hobnobbed at the castle include Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Dolores Del Rio, and Winston Churchill.
Forbes said, “Quite possibly the nation’s most famous castle, William Randolph Hearst went to great lengths to bring back the best of European architecture — most notably ceilings from churches and monasteries — which were pieced back together in California to create his highly eclectic Central Coast getaway.” The castle consists of 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms 19 sitting rooms all on nearly 127 acres. The castle’s estate includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, movie theater an airfield and even a private zoo. One of the centerpieces of Hearst Castle is Neptune’s Pool, originally constructed in the 1920’s the pool was enlarged twice by William Randolph Hearst and the architect Julia Morgan.
You can always just pull up to the estate, but to tour the castle, it’s highly recommended to reserve and purchase advance tickets.
