The Santa Barbara Courthouse Summer Movie Series is one of our favorite annual summer happenings. We can all agree outdoor movie screenings definitely harken an earlier era. The Santa Barbara Courthouse Summer Movie Series is hosted by the UCSB Arts & Lectures department and provides fans with screenings throughout the summer. This year’s theme is “Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd: Comedy Classics of the Silent Era.”
Several of the screenings this summer will be accompanied by live music, providing younger audiences with a firsthand glimpse into the cinematic experience of moviegoers in the early 20th century. The films being screened this summer include The Navigator (1924), Speedy (1928) and Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936). (IC Insider Tip: Definitely don’t miss Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times, this film features the iconic scene where Chaplin works on an assembly line that’s moving much too quickly; this scene can be seen in a host of other 20th century films and comedy sketches. We all have Chaplin to thank for this stroke of comedic genius!).
The films are shown at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Cambell Hall, located on UCSB’s campus and Fridays at 8:30 at the Courthouse’s Sunken Garden.
No outdoor movie screening is complete without tasty treats so below are a few commendations on where to pick up items for the perfect outdoor picnic basket:
Tupelo Junction Café
1218 State St.
The café itself is laidback and we love to grab lunch here on a casual Saturday but they are more than happy to do to-go orders as well. The Grilled Tequila Chicken wrap is delicious or if you’re feeling more adventurous try the Fried Green Tomato BLT.
Isabela Gourmet Foods
5 E Figueroa St
This boutique artisan grocery is a foodie paradise. Enjoy a wide variety of sandwiches, quiches and salads all perfect to grab and pack in your outdoor movie screening picnic basket.
