Due to our often-beautiful weather, life in Santa Barbara is filled with opportunities for outdoor fun. Whether you’re surfing the Pacific or hiking the Santa Ynez Mountains, it’s easy to lose yourself in the visual and atmospheric splendor of this great piece of Southern California. One of the area’s favorite nature fueled activities is celebrated annually at the Santa Barbara Kite Festival.
This year will be the 30th anniversary of the competition and gathering. Located in the beautiful Great Meadow at Santa Barbara City College, the festival will consist of a day’s worth of fun, family-friendly competitions. The brand new Most Beautiful competition will test who can make the most attractive handmade kite. There’s also the Kite Tail Chase, Kite Fighting, Sport Flying, Highest Flying, and Largest Kite competitions. Add some of the area’s favorite local food and beverage vendors to the mix, and you’ve got one fun day in the sun.
This free event is open to enthusiastic and novice kite flyers and makers alike. It’s great for people traveling with families and children, as the Santa Barbara Kite Festival truly brings out an astonishing innocence in all of us through the celebration of this high-flying pastime. For anyone planning on staying at the Hotel Milo in Santa Barbara during the festival, be sure to check out this locally beloved event.
For those visiting Santa Barbara throughout the rest of the month of April, there’s still plenty of opportunity to take part in the fun. The wind here will be just right, the warm of spring will be in full effect and flying a kite is an easy, fun excuse to get outdoors and enjoy the wonder of this fine city.
